Iraqi Young Leaders
The 14 Iraqi young leaders who visited the Oak Creek Sikh Temple with Serve 2 Unite’s Pardeep Kaleka and Arno Michaelis were a part of the Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program sponsored by the US Department of State, the US Embassy in Baghdad, World Learning and Global Youth Leadership. The young leaders came from Iraq along with about 40 other teens that spent 1 week together in Vermont and then split into small groups of 14 and went to different cities throughout the U.S. for 2 weeks of content and host family experiences.
The students in Milwaukee are from all over Iraq and include Christians, Sunni and Shia Muslims as well as Kurdish Iraqis. The Milwaukee group is focusing on peacebuilding and conflict transformation and staying with host families throughout the Greater Milwaukee area to build positive relationships across lines of differences and breakdown stereotypes.
After their time in Milwaukee they will meet back up with the large group in Washington D.C. to share what they have learned and to create projects based on what they saw and learned int heir host communities to take back to their cities in Iraq in hopes of creating positive change for their communities and countries.
