Arts @ Large is a non-profit organization that connects arts to academics through meaningful arts experiences for Milwaukee Public School (MPS) students. Arts @ Large was created in 2001 as an MPS district program with funds from the U. S. Department of Education. To maximize resources for MPS students, Arts @ Large became a nonprofit in 2005, engaging the funding community as partners in arts education for K-12 students.
Over the past 12 years, Arts @ Large has built an exemplary program that links community artist educators and higher education with teachers and students to create an atmosphere of arts-infused learning. We strive to make arts education accessible for ALL students. In the 2011/2012 school year, Arts @ Large provided services for 22 Milwaukee school communities with 12,000 students and their families. A multitude of professional development opportunities were offered for nearly 1,000 educators and teaching artists. Moreover, we provided a needed boost to the local arts community economy by contracting with 114 artists (47% of which were people of color) to work collaboratively with teachers implementing more than 120 artist residencies. We provided ample art, music and multimedia supplies and field trips to a variety of local and regional community organizations, museums and performances to add value to targeted curricular-based programming.
